Issue #439: How to Get Published
June 12, 2023
Greetings Fellow Travel Writers!

. . . and WELCOME all new subscribers. Thanks for joining us.

Since our last newsletter we’ve had perfect spring weather here in Seattle. With daytime temperatures between 60-75 degrees, low humidity, and cloudless skies, this is what makes suffering through Seattle’s notorious winter rain worthwhile.

My Press Pass to the Seattle International Film Festival gained me entry to 8 outstanding movies in the sci-fi, horror, and thriller genres. My SIFF review article for Videoscope Magazine is in the can and will be published next month. Along with the movies for my assignment, I also took in a few other films of personal interest.

This month I’m busy doing my 90-Minute Coaching sessions with all the writers who signed up to “pick my brain” in these one-on-one video calls. So many people are re-launching their travel writing and these coaching sessions are customized to help them meet their specific needs.

I’ve been busy answering their questions, helping them with their query letters and giving them feedback on their story ideas and writing. I’m showing them how and where to pitch their stories, and how to get more stories from their trips. I’m also introducing them to the art of requesting complimentary travel assistance from destination marketing media reps. Anything on their mind is fair game so our discussions are lively and engaging.

90-Minute Coaching has proved to be very popular. We don’t know when we’ll be offering our customized coaching service again at this reduced rate, but watch this newsletter to find out if we decide to offer another round later this year.

As for my own travel writing, I’m excited to be planning two assignments for a classic car magazine in August.

First, we’ll be in Canton, Ohio, visiting their Classic Car Museum. Then we’ll be driving to the small town of Eagles Mere, Pennsylvania (population 151), and touring their renowned classic car museum.

I always enjoy visiting small town America. Sometimes the towns are so small it feels like visiting Mayberry (from the Andy Griffith Show) – and I mean that in the very best possible way. It’s refreshing to find enthusiastic people who welcome us to their towns and who are proud to show us around.

These assignments will be my 23rd and 24th articles for this automobile enthusiasts’ publication. I started writing for them back in 2011.

Here’s a review of my marketing book by Trisha Miller, Editor,

“What’s the one thing every writer must do to be considered a professional? Get their articles published and get paid for it.

Now I know you’re probably thinking there’s dozens, maybe many dozens, of books about becoming a professional writer and how to market your work . . .

. . . But I have never known another freelance writer who has accomplished the level of professional success that Mr. Stevenson has in the timeframe in which he’s done it. He has sold over 1000 articles to magazines in 8 years. That alone qualifies him to be in a position to educate other writers, and speaks to the validity of his advice.

I’m impressed with the depth and thoroughness of the instructions the author presents, and that he does so in a very logically structured format. While he doesn’t try to teach the craft of writing – after all, there are many books and courses available to teach one good writing skills – he does lay out the process from start to finish in such a way that a raw beginner should be well on the way to selling articles in short order.

I really liked that the end of each chapter includes a “Summary and Action Checklist” to keep you focused on productive tasks, and that the book generously includes numerous sample letters and examples from his own experience.

But above all I loved most the fact that Mr. Stevenson is also a gifted editor who understands that in today’s short-attention-span world, brevity rules – he doesn’t waste words or pages on fluff.

At 157 pages, it’s stuffed full of more good advice and strategies than many longer (some much longer) books on the subject of travel writing that I’ve read.”
